Darlington Review – June 2008
June 27, 2008
What an exciting time we’ve had over the last few weeks. Six club members travelled to Chiang Rai in Thailand for the biennial SWP Conference of Clubs. This was a great choice for our conference. Not only were we able to conduct conference business in a wonderful venue we also had the opportunity to take tours of the country, and visit current and past projects undertaken by Soroptimist International in the area.
Of particular interest was a visit to villages involved in the Soroptimist International AIDS Mediation (SIAM) Project which was the project for the period of 1995-1999. This project was carried out in partnership with the Thai NGO – Population & Community Development Association and was an extension of the successful AIDS Education and Alternatives to Prostitution project in northern Thailand. This was the International Project when club Life Member, and Darlington’s own, Doctor Sheila Lungley was International Health Coordinator.
The current International Quadrennial Project is Project Sierra in partnership with Hope and Homes for Children in SIerra Leone.
After the conference some members were able to visit the current Federation Project “Hands across Borders” in Cambodia.
SI Helena now has two Federation programme coordinators Berenice Ritchie – chosen for the Human Rights and the Status of Women area and Robyn Cain – who was returned for the Environment area and also appointed Assistant Programme Director.
On the local front our Fashion Parade at the Guildford Landing was a great success and raised funds for The Royal Flying Doctor Service and West Australian Assistance Dogs Inc. We will be holding a Quiz Night in late August – watch for the details.
We are currently selling Entertainment Books at $65 each to assist with our fundraising. The club gets a portion of this amount and the buyer gets a great entertaining bargain – please call 92988593 for a book.
Remember ladies if you wish to find out more about us please call Rosalie on 92996230 – you never know – we may be what YOU are looking for. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Foothills Learning Centre, Edney Road, High Wycombe.
Until next time – Robyn Cain for Fay Kappler (still travelling in Asia!)
