Darlington Review – October 2008

October 27, 2008

We had a very successful Quiz Night at the end of August. At our September meeting we presented a cheque to John White and Derek Fletcher from the Kalamunda SES from the money we raised at the quiz night. Derek then gave as presentation about the SES-State Emergency Service. That they are funded from the emergence services levy that we pay when we pay our rates. There are 19 units in the metro area with 2000 volunteers and as with all organisations who rely on volunteers they could do with more volunteers. The SES provides extensive training to volunteers to carry out the work they do. They also have a mounted section which was used in the recent search for the missing German tourist.

The SES respond to flood, cyclone, storm, earthquake and tsunami emergencies. To be a SES volunteer you need to be 17 years old. The Kalamunda SES meets on a Monday night in Walliston. For SES assistance the phone number is 132500.

September 21 was the International Day of Peace and also UNIFEM spring walk day. Members of Soroptimist International of Helena were helping at Trek the Trail in Mundaring. We all wore a badge to signify UNIFEM spring walk day and International Day of Peace. Several members trekked the trail.

18 November we will be hosting an Information evening on Climate Change presented by Gary Warden, at the Hillview Golf Course at 7pm.

We meet on the third Tuesday of the month at the Foothills Learning centre, Edney Road, High Wycombe. At 7pm. Phone 92996230 for further information.

Fay Kappler, Publicity Officer, Post Office Box 1181, Kalamunda, 6076.
