Darlington Review – November 2009
November 22, 2009
Our next meeting will be a dinner meeting on November 10th at 6.30pm at Hale Road Tavern in Forrestfield. We will be having a speaker from the Madjitil Moorna choir. Jo will show us a DVD and talk about the choir’s recent venture into the Kimberley. It should be an interesting evening.
Please phone Kim on 9453 3214 if you would like to attend.
At our dinner meeting at the beginning of October we viewed a DVD update on Soroptimist International project, Project SIerra. The DVD showed various women studying and working. Several of the women were interviewed about how the project has changed their lives for the better. So far there has been $400,000 US raised for this project.
Each year there an International Presidents Appeal to which each soroptimist club in the world gives a donation. This year the International President, Hanne Jensbo has decided the Appeal will support the continuation of a Norwegian project in Moldova – Hopes and dreams for everyone. Moldova is the poorest country in Europe.
The project has three areas of activities:
- Life-skills education – preventing social problems
- Higher education – career counselling and support
- Support to victims of trafficking, to help them return to a normal life
