Darlington Review – September 2008

Justine Colyer from Samaritans spoke to us at our last meeting.

Samaritans were founded in the UK in 1954, and have been in Western Australia for 40 years. There as 400 branches in 40 countries world wide.

The Samaritans mission Statement: To offer non-judgemental, emotional support to the lonely, despairing and suicidal, or those at risk of becoming so.

Samaritans is a 24 hour service that is non-religious, non- judgemental, confidential and anonymous care-line. They take 16,000-19,000 calls in a year. They require 50-100 volunteers to run the service. If you volunteer they conduct 4 training courses of 8 weeks each year.

Would you like to help Samaritans help? You could donate money, remember them in your will, apply to join as a volunteer or you can join their “Friends of Samaritans” group. For more details contact Samaritans on 93815725.

On 21 September members of Soroptimist International of Helena will be helping a Trek the Trail. This is UNFEM Spring Walk day and also International Day of Peace.

18 November we will be hosting an Information evening on Climate Change presented by Gary Warden, at the Hillview Golf Course at 7pm.

Friday 31 October there is to be a fundraiser for Project SIerra. “A Bollywood Ball” Project SIerra is the Quadrennial International Project 2007-2011:- A family and a future. It is supporting women caring for children in extreme poverty and providing a caring secure family home for children who are alone or at risk of abandonment in Sierra Leone.
